Safesky often stops showing aircrafts

We did a tour around Germany, Austria, Croatia, czech where i used safe sky a lot!
And i noticed, then after some time safe sky stops showing aircraft in that radar screen. The app didn’t crash, but simply all aircraft disappear.
Then i have to stop the app, restart and start tracking and the aircrafts appear again.

But strange is, this only happens in that radar screen.

When I’m in that overview map, before start tracking, the aircrafts are visible all time.

I’m using the latest version in Android 15.

Hi,

is Android suspending the background process?

I don’t know! How can i find out?

Hello @Breenild ,

Thanks for the message. This is not expected.

From what I read, can you confirm that you are on the radar view, you eventually see no aircrafts, “stop” and “take off” again and you see traffic right away?

If so, we are going to try to reproduce this. In your next flight, if you eventually get a chance to screen record, that could be useful. Also, instead of “Stop” and “Take off” again, could you try to switch to the map view, and return to the radar?

You can contact us on support@safesky.app to provide your feedbacks.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Tristan,
It’s exactly in this screen, where the problem occurs.
On the last 7 days we flew a lot as a formation of 3 planes.
And at the beginning i could see all of them. (And thankfully now I can mute aircrafts, differently than 2 years before. Thanks for adding this feature!).

But after quite some time (i can’t tell you a number. Maybe 30 minutes to 60 minutes?) all the other aircrafts suddenly disappear from the screen.

But when I push on STOP and get to this screen …

… I could see them again.
And even when I then press on takeoff again, they are visible in the radar view as well for some time…

Unfortunately for a while i have no flights, so i can’t reproduce it. Maybe here on ground…

I didn’t know about the ability to switch between radar screen and map screen…
I found out today! Thanks for that.
I will try it next time!

Thanks for the details.

We are going to try to reproduce on the ground first, and analyse the log files we get from you to understand what can cause this issue.

Please, in case you are able to reproduce too, let me know a date and time so that we can cross check logs too.

Fly Safe,

Tristan

I experience similar symptoms and I did not find any way to report bugs or contact the developers, so I tag along on this thread:

Setup:

iPad mini 6th gen, iPadOS 18.3.1, SafeSky 3.0.29, SkyDemon 4.1.2.418.

SafeSky runs in the background, SkyDemon is used in full screen to show moving map and traffic.

Description:

In the first minutes of flight all is well and works as intended, Traffic is shown properly.

At some point during climb or departure the cell coverage degrades to the point that the iPad shows “0 bars”, the LTE symbol disappears in the top status bar disappears.

Traffic is no longer shown on the SkyDemon map.

——

So far, so good. This is an understandable limitation of the cell network based data feed.

——

Now the iPad regains cell network and LTE.

SkyDemon still shows no traffic.

I switch to SafeSky as foreground app.

SafeSky also does not show traffic.

The grey bar shows “Offline” (see screenshot).

——

At this point I am puzzled why no traffic is shown while cell coverage is indicated.

I press “Stop” and the SafeSky map immediately shows me traffic.

I press “Take Off” again, traffic now visible in Radar mode as well.

I switch back to SkyDemon, traffic is now also displayed on the moving map again.

Some minutes later when cell connection gets bad again the traffic disappears again and does not automatically recover.

Repeating above steps however reliably “fixes” the problem temporarily until the next time cell coverage briefly drops.

I have not tried the above mentioned feature to switch between map and radar screen.

Interpretation:

To me this looks like a huge untapped potential to get fewer outages if the SafeSky app reliably, or more “aggressively” tried to reestablish its connection instead of me having to press “Stop” and “Take Off” everytime.

Happy to share data and timestamps with the devs, let me know if I can be of help.

Now that I read this, I experienced exactly the same, but while flying had no time to debug it so extensively.

When returning to my home base (EHLE) with a lot of local traffic, which Is ee nomally in SkyDemon via Safesky, @ 1000 fy from a IFR flight @ 5000 ft I did not see any traffic on SkyDemon.

This makes the app relatively useless.
I agree with rac-flyer re-esablishing of showing the traffic should be fully automatic, so a workaround via pressing Stop/Take-Off in SafeSky (which is not primarily visible) is not acceptable in a high workload environment.

Hope this is solved soon.
