So, am regularly flying in glider operating areas, and we are also close to a Class D airport.
I have a SkyEcho 2, and want to use that with SafeSky. Safesky device is the iPad M4 OR the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Do I understand this correctly***?*** Since SE2 can receive both FLARM and ADS-B, I should get a warning on SafeSky IF I am connected to the SE2 WiFi - even without mobile coverage. (I have configured SE2 to receive FLARM)
I tried this last time, we were at 8500 ft, and we could see a few gliders out of the window (and on the radio), but not on SafeSky (since we do not have mobile coverage at that altitude).
Do we have a configuration guide on using this kind of setup, e.g.
using EC devices specifically SE2 with SafeSky?
BIG thanks and have a good weekend.
(tagging @Vincent , and @Tristan: I got feedback that you were passionate and an expert in this! )
You can indeed connect your SkyEcho 2 to the SafeSky app, and you will receive air-to-air traffic directly via SafeSky, even without an internet connection. This is particularly useful at high altitude without mobile coverage.
However, when you do have internet access, SafeSky will intelligently combine the traffic received from your SkyEcho 2 with the network traffic from SafeSky itself. This way, you get the best of both worlds: real-time air-to-air and aggregated network traffic.
Regarding FLARM reception, unfortunately, the SkyEcho 2 acts only as a pass-through for FLARM signals. It cannot decode FLARM traffic on its own.
The only practical way to display FLARM traffic is via an additional SkyDemon subscription. In that setup:
The SkyEcho 2 will forward raw FLARM packets to SkyDemon.
SkyDemon will then use your subscription and FLARM decryption key to decode and display the FLARM traffic.
At this moment, the SafeSky app does not support FLARM decoding and therefore ignores these packets. This limitation unfortunately comes from FLARM’s licensing policy, not from SafeSky’s side.
As a final point, you might also want to look into the Aero-Tracker, a highly capable device that combines air-to-air reception and SafeSky network traffic in a single, integrated solution.
While FLARM decoding is not yet supported, I know there is ongoing development by Avionix, aiming to enable this feature through a future firmware update.
BIG thanks Tristan, I’ll check out the video. I have the SD, I absolutely prefer having the SafeSky, especially the radar view, much, much easier for me! So, was hoping that FLARM could be received directly!
I’ll check out the other device too, might be running out of space to plug them in though. I have the SE2, the iPad (navigation), and the SafeSky Radar view on the iPhone
