Altitude of own aircraft not correctly transmitted/logged to SkyDemon when no internet connection

It looks like that SafeSky does not provide the correct altitude to te log of SkyDemon when there is no internet connection available (e.g. above water).

When flying above water, altitude was between 1000 and 1700 with a local QNH of 1021. But SkyDemon shows in its log 0 ft!
It looks like that only when there is an internet connection, the logged altitude in SkyDemon is correct.

Info:

  • To use SkyDemon with SafeSky you are required to us ‘Use GDL90 Compatible Device’ at the ‘Fly’ setting of SkyDemon. Otherwise other aircraft will not be shown in SkyDemon. So SkyDemon is not using the phones GPS directly but via SafeSky.

Hello Peter,
I used SS with SD a few years ago, shortly after it was created, and I experienced significant flaws, you are mentioning in this forum, and I gave up at the time. I’m now giving it a 2nd chance, and I’m of course interested to see, how it works nowadays. What you’re reporting here looks at a 1st glance like an SD problem. I know that SD is not very enthusiastic about SS. The question from what you’re reporting here is, what did the SD Altitude/Height instrument show while flying? Was it zero too, or is the altitude just not logged, because there might be an issue with GPS data coming through GDL90?

I checked an older log of a similar flight when I did not use SS or GDL90 as GPS source yet.
Indeed the same problem: SD logs an altitude of 0 ft when over water!

So it is a strange SD problem!
I reported it to SD, waiting for their reply.

I have no idea what the altitude/height were at the instrument of SD during the flight. I only noticed the issue when having a look at the log. While flying I use my aircraft instruments, not the ones of SD.

There is a setting in SafeSky regarding selecting a GPS source. The recommendation is not to use SS as a GPS source. Is this by any chance turned on?
Tony

In SkyDmon, you only have two options, either 1) data from the ‘Location Services’, i.e. the phone or 2) via the GDL90 Compatible Device’.
For traffic info in SkyDemon from SafeSky it is required(!) to use the GDL90 source, So I also expect that GPS data comes from SafeSky as that is driving the GDL90 interface.

Anyhow it does not seem to be an issue of SafeSky, as I found the same issue in SkyDemon logs from before using SafeSky. I have submitted the issue and the logs to the SkyDemon team. They are investigating it at the moment.

Peter, When you refer to the SkyDemon logs, what do you see in the log to indicate no (or zero) altitude? Does the SkyDemon “Radar” trace show dropouts, or you flying at zero feet?
I can try a test by driving to my home airfield, and running SafeSky and SkyDemon. I know there are areas with no mobile data coverage, so I should be replicate what you see.
Tony

The track is fully correct and does not show dropouts. Altitude in log is approx 0 ft, but only when flying above larger parts of water (i.c. Waddenzee and IJselmeer) and I was certainly not swimming
I found out it also happend when I did not have SafeSky yet and had the phone in airplane mode.
So it is a SkyDemon issue. They are investigating it.
