Aero Tracker questions

Hello!
Before buying, I tried to reach out to sales to better understand the Aero Tracker. Unfortunately, I never received a reply, so any help answering the questions below is much appreciated:

-Why does the device need internet connection if the phone or tablet that I am using to display the radio traffic already capable of streaming the internet traffic?

-In case it absolutely needs internet connection: Can it be used with a mobile hotspot instead of an internal SIM-card?

-Can it be set to receive only (disable transmitting radio traffic) to serve as a ground station?

Hello Fixusc,

I have been testing the Aero Tracker, as a GA pilot, so can answer some of your questions.

  1. The Tracker’s built-in LTE data connection capability is superior to a regular mobile data connection. SafeSky will have to tell you more about the benefits but is something to do with being more efficient and quicker with regards to transfer of data (other aircraft positions in your vicinity (MLAT and OGN data etc.)) and the ability to seamlessly switch between mobile operators when flying.
  2. I believe the Aero Tracker’s LTE data connection will only work with its built in sim card.
  3. Regarding using the Aero Tracker as a ground station, I think you need to contact SafeSky about this so they can understand what you are trying to achieve.

FYI, the Aero Tracker only transmits data via its ADS-L and LTE capability.
However, if the Aero Tracker isn’t moving the LTE data service stops after 10 minutes in order to minimise data transfer over LTE.
As soon as you move (as in flying), data transmission over LTE starts again.

I hope this helps.

Tony

Thanks @Tony for the good feedbacks.

In addition to this, the built-in SIM card comes with roaming enabled, allowing it to automatically select the best available network, even within your own country, to maximise LTE reception during flight.

The Aero-Tracker is designed as a true Plug & Fly solution, meaning you cannot use your own SIM card or hook on your phone as a mobile hotspot.
